  1. Salvē!

We won't have a skype session today (Thurs. 9/22). Use the class time instead to review Mango Latin, starting in the beginning. Write down the last question/answer you do and bring it to class on Monday.

  2. Class work session for Wed, 9/28:

Continue with Mango Latin. Write down the last question/answer and be able to tell me what is was and also provide a summary of the lessons you did. Pay attention to case ending chnages that you may remember from last year, and we can review what cases they are an example of.

  3. Over the break:

Assuming you don't have the new Assimil CD's abailable to you, use the on-line sound files for the older version you have in your packet.

Here is the link: scroll down to find the little animated man reading a scroll (for sound files).

    http://www.latinitatis.com/latinitas/menu_gb.htm

For each "lectio", listen and follow along as many times as you'd like. After a few times, try reading the Latin out loud. Aslo read the French for comparison. Look up any words in French you don't know. The exericises are not on the sounds files, but read them as well, looking up whatever French words you need to know. Don't worry about the French conjugations -- see if can ust identify the verb, for now. Over the weekend and break try to go through the first two lessons.

  4. Salvē! Over the weekend, first review lectio tertia one more time. Listen to the CD and follow along, then read it out loud (both the Latin and the French) several times. Listen to the CD one more time after that.

Then, move on to lectio quarta. Read both the Latin and the French first, paying particular attention to the stressed syllables in Latin, indicated by bold type. Next, listen to the CD and follow along several times. Then read the Latin text followed by the French text out loud several times. Play the CD a couple of times after that, following along. We will read the French notes together and go over their meaning.

Attention: Domus has an irregular declension. It might help to look at pp 261-262 in Wheelock, "Place Constructions", regarding
"at home". Section II (1) and the section beginning with Domus in bold are the most relevant parts. Don't worry about memorizing this information, just read it for now for the general concepts of how the cases are used without prepositions for these particular nouns, looking only at domus for now.

  5. For classtime Monday, October 31:

Use the entire time to work with Mango Latin. Write up a breif summary of what you think the lesson (whichever one you're on) is about. Write down the last question Mango asks (along with the answer) and bring it to class on Tuesday.

  6. For Monday, Nov.7th:

Review the lectio quarta dialogues in the usual way: listen to the CD following along with the text. Read the French text out loud yourelf, and then read both Latin and French texts outloud again. Listen once more time to the CD (or actually as much as you have time for -- or can stand!). Complete all of the exercises as you can -- writing down the Latin, French and then also English translations.

  8. For Thursday, Nov 16:

Finish the last exercise from Lectiō quinta, Exercitātiō secunda on pages 19 and 20. Read both the Latin and French answers out loud (the Latin sentence with the missing word(s) suppied and the French translation. Then write down an English translation.

If you have time, take a look at
« Rome et Nous » , also on pages 19 and 20. Don't worry about being able to read it. Pick three French words from the text that you don't know and look them up in a French/English dictionary (actual or on-line). Write down the definitions for class.

  9. Review what you did in Assimil over break, and we'll go over it Tuesday.

  10. For Monday do the French 1 assignment, which I am repeating here, as well as the Latin assignment below.

For Monday. Write three simple sentences in French using the verb avoir, which we went over in class on Thursday. Use three different subject pronouns (je, tu, il/elle, etc.). Stick to the basics (subject, verb, obect and whatever article (un/une/des or le/la/les) is necessary. You can use the yellow box on page 75 of Mais, Oui as a reminder and whatever examples you find in the book as well. Try to use different objects rather than the same one in order to vary your vocabulary.

    Latin:

Review lessons 6 and 7 and listen to the CD as much as possible. I'm going to give you a quiz on lesson 7 (the review) on Thursday of next week. It will be on phrases from the dialogues so far. I'll post more details on the quiz next week.

  11. or Tuesday, Dec. 6:

Review the French greetings and introductions in the yellow box on page 6 of Mais, oui. Listen to lesson 7 in Assimil and follow along in the book.

  12. For Monday, Dec 12:

Please see French 1 homework assignment.

Also, keep Assimil Latin lessons 1-7 fresh in your mind. Listening to the review dialogue for lesson 7 some more.

look at the French text of "Rome et nous" (or "Rome et eux" as it may pertain to us!) on page 12. Scan through and see what words you recognize and look up words you don't know. See if you can determine the general subject of the paragraph, if not more.

  13. FOr Monday, Dec. 19:

If you haven't yet done the Latin part of the previous assignment, do it for Monday. If you have, do more of it! Look up more words you don't know. Take a reresher look at Lectio septima and a refresher listen to the CD as well.

  14. OVer break:

Keep Assimil lessons 1-7 alive! Listen and repeat some more. Look up more French words in the "Rome and them" sections ant try to ffigur eout the French.

Take a look at this video. It's a fun way to think about how much French and Latin is in English:

  16. While working from home this week:

See the French 1 post. Add the other verbs on the "out of this world" verb age that you click, listen, and repeat. This list should include savoir, vouloir, pouvoir, venir, and tenir.

For Latin itself, if you haven't yet done so, start doing the exercises on pages 31-32 for Lectio Octava. As usual, complete the Latin per the instructions, translate to English when a translation is requested, but also copy over the French translations and pay attention to how the Latin is rendered into French.

  17. Please see the last blog entry. After you've practiced that material, move on to the page about landsscapes.

    http://www.languageguide.org/french/vocabulary/landscapes/

    For Latin, add the following:

look up some fo the French vocabulary in the "Rome et nous" section of Lectio octava, page 31-32 and try to get a gist of what that section is about. We'll take a closer look together. As always practice listening and repeating to the lesson on the CD.

  18. For in-school work session on Thursday, 1/12/17:

Continue with Mango Latin where you last left off. Write down a one sentence summary of what the lesson was about inclluding both the subject (Gallic tribes, for example) and grammar (pracice with accusative?).

If working from home today, work in greater depth with the last blog assignments (French review and Assimil).

  19. For Monday, January 16:

No new assignment. Please review the last homework you've done to keep it in mind.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Continue to look up French vocabulary words that you may not know in "Rome et nous" on page 31. Try to get the gist of the meaning in order to discuss the role of the "paterfamilias" in Roman life. Look at the expression in Latin and in French about fathers and sons; do we say something like that in English? Review the frist and second declcension in Wheelock on pages 13 and 17 and look for these forms in the Assimil readings so far. Write down a few examples of first and second decelension nouns as they've been used in Assimil and identify them by gender, number, and case.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Look up the vocabulary and scan the meaning of the "Rome et nous" on page 31 (yesterday's assignement). Continue with Lectio Nona of Assimil and prepare the exercises on page 35 and 36. Look at the cartoon on page 36!

  23. For Thursday, Becruary 9th:

Look up any words in French that you might not know in the French translation "a la salle a manger".If you have time, or for homework for Monday, start excercitatio prima on pages 43-44, working through the Latin and French and then writing up the usual English version.

    ReplyDelete

  26. For Monday, 2/20

Create your own modern fable in BD format to physically share in class. You don't have to make it a "great work of art", but it is 3 45-minute class sessions, and homework time, so make it worthwhile!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Please continue with the Assimil Latin in addition to any other given assignments. If you have finished with the exercises for Lectio undecima, then listen to the audio and follow the text for Lectio duodecima for Monday. If you aren't already doing so, start keeping a running ist of French vocabulary encountered in Assimil with both English and Latin equivalents.

  28. Over break:

Try reading this little story. This link will only be freely accessible until the 28th, so make sure you get to it before then.

The text is interactive with all of the vocabulary and much of the grammar visible when you click on the words.

"Pastor et leo" (shepherd and lion).

Take this opportunity to also review Wheelock chapters 1-8 and keep your eye out for anything that seems familar from Assimil and Mamgo.

Try to spend some time each day (or as regularly as you can) with Mango Latin where you last left off.

  29. For Tuesday March 7b class time. Assuming Cambridge Latin site (Pastor et Leo) is now in fact closed, follow the instructions from over break for Asssimil, ,and/or use the time constructively as you see fit (including Mango as a possibility).
